10 Myths vs. Truths: What Therapy Actually Is (And Isn't)

So, you’re considering therapy.

Maybe you’re standing at a crossroads, navigating a major life transition, or simply feeling a persistent "tug" that there is more to your story than you’re currently living. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I view therapy as a sacred container—a space where you are the subject matter expert and I am your clinical guide.

However, because of how therapy is often portrayed in media, many walk through the door with expectations that don't quite match the clinical reality. To help you get the most out of your healing, let’s debunk the 10 most common myths I see in my practice.

The Myths vs. The Clinical Truths

1. Myth: Therapy is a "Quick Fix"

The Truth: We live in a microwave culture, but emotional growth requires neuroplasticity. Your brain needs time to physically reorganize and form new neural connections. Real change tends to unfold gradually as you apply new patterns in your life outside of our sessions.

2. Myth: It’s "Just Talking"

The Truth: While it looks like a conversation, it’s a strategic application of evidence-based modalities like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and Somatic Therapy. We are engaging in reflection, emotional processing, and—most importantly—pattern recognition.

3. Myth: My Therapist Will Tell Me What to Do

The Truth: Ethical therapy is person-centered. I am not the authority of your life; I am a guide. My goal is to help you develop your own clarity so you can live in alignment with your values, not mine.

4. Myth: Therapy is Only for "Broken" People

The Truth: Many seek therapy simply because they are curious. Most people I see are in transitory phases—they are on the verge of a major personal transformation and want a safe space to navigate that growth.

5. Myth: Therapists Have All the Answers

The Truth: I have training in psychology, but you are the subject matter expert on your own life. Therapy works best as a collaborative alliance. We work together to uncover the practices you can implement to move forward.

6. Myth: Showing Up Means You’re "Healed"

The Truth: Simply attending sessions is only half the work. I like to call therapy a "practice." The insights we gain in the room must be experimented with and applied in your daily life for meaningful change to take root.

7. Myth: Therapy Will Prove That I’m Right (and they’re wrong)

The Truth: While I will always validate your experience, a good therapist will also invite you to examine situations from multiple perspectives. We look at relational patterns to help you expand your worldview, acknowledging that multiple truths can exist at once.

8. Myth: Therapy Alone is Enough

The Truth: Healing is holistic. While therapy is a powerful catalyst, it works best when paired with healthy boundaries, supportive relationships, lifestyle changes, and sometimes medical support. It isn't a "one-size-fits-all" cure.

9. Myth: Therapy Can "Save" My Relationship

The Truth: Therapy can clarify dynamics, but meaningful change requires participation and accountability from everyone involved. It is unrealistic to expect years of conflict to be resolved without mutual effort and a shared agreement to move forward.

10. Myth: Talking About the Past is Just "Blaming" People

The Truth: Using frameworks like Attachment Theory, we look at the past to understand the "map" of your current behavior. It’s not about blame; it’s about understanding how early experiences shaped you so you can choose a different response today.

The "Sacred Practice" of Self-Discovery

Therapy is one of the most sovereign acts you can perform. It is the choice to stop running and start looking inward. Research consistently shows that the therapeutic alliance—the relationship you have with your therapist—is the single highest predictor of whether you’ll have a positive experience.

If you are looking for a space where nothing is off-limits and where your freedom is the priority, you are in the right place.
